DHARAMSHALA, Sept. 23: Regional Tibetan Youth Congress (RTYC) Leh rejoined the Tibetan Youth Congress following a recent visit by the TYC President and General Secretary to the region.

The two spent ten days in Ladakh from September 10 to September 20 holding several meetings.

“We had a long meeting with the executive members RTYC Leh on September 14. At the end of the meeting, they said they would like all the members in the region to have a say in the decision making,” said TYC President Gonpo Dhondup.

A meeting was convened on September 17 of the current & former executive members and the members of RTYC Leh. In the 6-hour long debate and discussion that took place, a unanimous decision was taken to reunite with TYC with some conditions.

At a settlement-level meeting held on Saturday to publicly communicate the reunion, TYC Central Executive (Centrex) congratulated RTYC Leh for reuniting with the TYC family.

RTYC Ladakh is made up of Leh and Jangthang chapters. While Leh, where the overwhelming population of the settlement resides, had agreed to reunite, an official agreement is awaited from the Jangthang chapter.

Former TYC President Tenzing Jigme from Minnesota welcomed the news and thanked the members in Ladakh for advancing towards unity and strengthening the movement.

“Absolutely elated to hear the news that after six years, our chapters in Ladakh - Leh and Jhangthang have both agreed to join back under the TYC Centrex. This is wonderful! Good job to current centrex members for their efforts,” he shared on social media account.

Jigme was first elected as the President at the TYC 15th General Body meeting in 2013 where members of eight chapters detached from TYC over differences stemming from their proposal to shift TYC’s stance from Independence to autonomy. The meeting, on its opening day, passed a resolution that sought for the organization to continue its goal for independent Tibet.

Jigme, who served two consecutive terms since then, helmed the organization at the peak of the squabble and managed to mitigate the confrontation, bringing back Mundgod and Bangalore chapters in six years of his leadership.

With RTYC Ladakh coming back to the TYC fold, there now remains five RTYC chapters -Bylakuppe, Hunsur, Kollegal, Dalhousie, and Pandoh from the original eight chapters.

TYC President Gonpo Dhondup said the organization will visit the other five estranged chapters and is looking forward for positive responses.
