Brussels, BELGIUM: An intense two-hour-long conference on re-education camps in China and persecution against minorities was held in the European Parliament on Tuesday.

Hosted by MEP Thomas Mann, the conference featured two sections: a panel discussion on the situation in China addressed by Ms Ursula Gauthier, French journalist, Mr Vincent Metten, EU Policy Director, ICT, Mr Dolkun Isa, President, World Uyghur Congress, Ms Vanessa Frangville, Senior Lecturer, ULB and Mr Man-Yan Ng, Board member of International Society for Human Rights; and a second deliberation on what should be the response of the European Union.

The panelists were MEPs Belder, Mann, Ms Marie Holzman, Sinologist, Ms Lea Perekrests, Deputy Director of Human Rights Without Frontiers and Mr Henri Malosse, Former President of European Economic and Social Committee.

While introducing the conference, MEP Mann spoke in detail about the situation in Tibet and the various activities and events organised by the Tibet Interest Group in the European Parliament.

He also recalled his recent participation at the 60th Anniversary of the Tibetan National Uprising Day in Dharamsala. He noted with special reference to the audience with His Holiness the Dalai Lama and his admiration for the values of the European Union.

Mr Vincent Metten, EU Policy Director spoke briefly and clearly on the role of Party Secretary Chen Quanguo during his tenure in Tibet from 2011-2016. The notorious grid system and neighborhood watch were perfected by Chen in Tibet Autonomous Region. “Everyone a watchman, every village a fortress” is his theory. Now he’s replicated this in East Turkistan.

Ms Frangville, Senior Lecturer, ULB presented an academic incisive study of Chinese so-called vocational training camps in East Turkistan. She unveiled the drastic contrariness in what China paints a picture of East Turkistan and what the reality is on the ground.

Mr Ng, Board member of International Society for Human Rights presented the Chinese dubious image. He traced China’s rise to power throughout many decades on the basis of deception and trickery. While engaging in relations with the free world it never kept its promise of change and transition to free society in China. The free world has been duped by China like a mafia.

Representative Tashi Phuntsok, in his intervention, thanked Mr Mann and the European Parliament for their consistent support for Tibet. “That Tibet has survived for 60 years showed the indomitable spirit of the Tibetans. Though China wants to suppress the Tibetan spirit, Tibet would not bow down,” Representative said.

More importantly, he cautioned the free world of Chinese divisive and dubious policies and actions. He however, acknowledged that there is a push back against China that he thought was a positive development.
