DHARAMSHALA, May 8: The US government-funded broadcaster, the Voice of America, has said that there has been no involvement of either the US or Chinese government in the cutting short of a three hour interview with the fugitive Chinese tycoon Guo Wengui as alleged by the suspended journalists of its East Asia division.

An interview with Guo aired on April 19 was abruptly cut short to over an hour from pre-scheduled three-hour program. The businessman wanted by Interpol claims to have evidence of corruption done by communist party officials and their family members at the highest level.

The VOA said that the decision to suspend its journalists were based on ‘journalistic principles of verification, balance and fairness that are standard industry practice and apply universally to all VOA services’.

The suspended journalists, Sasha Gong, Fred Wang, Huchen Zhang, and Robert Li, have demanded an ‘independent’ federal investigation into the incident to find out if the broadcaster had ‘caved in’ to Beijing’s pressure. They also alleged that the incident has ‘seriously undermined VOA's integrity and credibility as a US media outlet, and damaged the US national interests.’

The suspended journalists - currently placed under ‘administrative leave’ with the internal investigation still ongoing demand the investigation to be conducted by officials independent from VoA and to cover all parties involved including the top management.

The suspended journalists alleged that the program was cut short under the pressure from the management. The broadcaster, however, had claimed it as ‘miscommunication’.

“In a miscommunication, the stream was allowed to continue beyond the first hour. When this was noticed, the feed was terminated,” a VoA spokesperson, Bridget Serchak said last month.

She had also said that the content from these interviews would be released but, as of now the there is no information when the remaining segment of the interview would be aired or not.

Taking ‘Guo’s interview’ as an example, the suspended journalists have also questioned the changes happening in the Chinese section in the recent years that have ‘systematically undermined the effectiveness of VoA broadcasting to China and demoralized the staff in the Branch’.

Guo's interview with VOA was much anticipated following his claims that he had evidence of corruption at high levels of the Communist Party. The broadcaster had said the internet live-stream of Guo's interview would last for three hours, but it was cut after it aired for barely over an hour.

Guo is a property tycoon who is wanted on corruption charges by the Chinese authorities and has been red flagged by the Interpol. He left China in 2013 and is mostly based in the United States.

VOA provides programming for broadcast on radio, television and the Internet in English and 42 foreign languages including Tibetan. It's biweekly news bulletin and 'Kunleng' talk show is a widely watched TV program for Tibetan exiles around the world on various platforms.
