DHARAMSHALA, Feb. 4: The Taiwanese President has taken a dig at China in her Lunar new year message posted late Sunday night in what is seen as another incident in the island nation’s defiance to Beijing’s claim over the country and its aggressive rhetoric.

Tsai Ing-wen’s message, clearly pointed to Beijing, mentioned China's lack of freedom and democracy, saying she hoped ethnic Chinese all over the world could experience the "blessing" of democracy.

She said, “Those in places lacking democracy may not understand this commitment. We hope that ethnic Chinese all over the world can experience this blessing.”

“So I want to make three new year’s wishes for our ethnic Chinese friends both at home and abroad. I hope that you may all enjoy democracy, freedom and continued prosperity,” she further added.

The Chair of the Democratic Progressive party, Tsai has repeatedly challenged China’s claim over the island nation and has been vocal towards Beijing and its expansionist designs.

Although winning elections in a landslide victory four years ago, her party suffered loss to the Beijing-inclined Kuomintang in mayoral and local elections in November ahead of the Presidential elections.

China has shown aggressiveness in claiming Taiwan to be its territory and exercising undue influences in changing the popular narrative. China fumed at nations which listed Taiwan as a separate nation and also hinted at sanctions to companies that did the same.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has said that he will not hesitate to use military power to takeover the small island nation.
