Tashi, aged around 21, who was a monk at Kirti Monastery died of burn
injuries a day after he staged self-immolation protest on 13 August
2012 in Ngaba (Chinese: Aba) County, Ngaba Tibetan and Qiang
Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan Province.
Speaking to Tibetan Centre for Human Rights and Democracy, an exile source with contacts in Ngaba said that it is not immediately known whether his body was handed over
to his family.
“Soon after his self-immolation, People's Armed Police
including special armed police took Tashi to a hospital in Ngaba from
where he was transferred to Barkham where he passed away,” the source said.
On 14 August, Tibetan shops and restaurants in Ngaba area remained
closed to mourn the passing away of Tashi and Lungtok, both of whom
died after their joint self-immolation protests. Local Tibetans made
offerings, performed prayers and observed rituals for the departed
souls.
Following the twin self-immolations, the chief disciplinarian and
staff of Monastery Management Committee of Kirti Monastery were called
for several meetings at the County government office.
