DHARAMSHALA, Nov. 19: The Ottawa government has announced a grant of 5.4 million Canadian Dollars for the education of young Tibetans in exile based in India, Nepal and Bhutan. The announcement was made by Canadian MP and Chair of Parliamentary Friends of Tibet, Arif Virani, in the presence of Tibetan Prime Minister Dr Lobsang Sangay during a Tibetan community felicitation gathering at the Tibetan Canadian Culture Center in Toronto on Sunday.

MP Virani said that the Canadian government has allotted the fund which will be released over the course of 5 years for educating young Tibetans in the Indian sub-continent through the exile Tibetan government known officially as the Central Tibetan Administration.

The Canadian MP for Parkdale-High Park who is a major proponent in acquiring the funding and lobbying for the development said that he felt proud to serve his constituents, many of which are Tibetans.

Fellow MPs James Maloney and Sven Spengman also joined in the celebrations and espoused their solidarity with the Tibetan community in Canada as well as the Tibetan issue and promised continued support.

Tibetan President Sangay expressed gratitude for the funding on the behalf of the Tibetan people and his administration. He said that the funding for education of Tibetan youngsters means providing resources for their passion, intellect and aspirations and fuelling the Tibetan movement moving forward.

“This funding will go a long way in educating the future leaders of the Tibetan people. The funding will fulfil the aspirations of Tibetan people in exile and inside Tibetan, that one day soon, His Holiness the Dalai Lama will return back to Tibet and freedom will be restored to Tibet,” Dr. Sangay said.

The Dharamshala based Tibetan government in exile is supplemented by funding by foreign governments and organisations around the world. The United States is the largest funder to the CTA with 11.5 million USD in the last 11 years.
