DHARAMSHALA, October 15: The Chinese officials in Tibet’s Sertha region have resorted to luring monks and nuns into leaving the institution by offering money, according to the Radio Free Asia.

According to a source, the officials have been approaching the monks and nuns to take the money and leave voluntarily. “They are going from door to door handing out bilingual flyers encouraging them to accept the offer of 20,000 yuan for voluntary departure,” the source added.

The same source added that a further 30,000 yuan is being offered if they give up their homes to be destroyed.

Monks and nuns previously thought to be safe from the evacuation are also asked to leave the premises of Tibet’s largest Buddhist institution, which once had over 10,000 students including ethnic Han Chinese.

Founded by Khenpo Jigme Phuntsok in 1980, the institution is currently witnessing a massive demolition drive in the name of renovation and reductions in the strength of the institute. According to the official documents, China aims at cutting the center’s strength to 5,000 by 2017.

The students from the TAR and outside Serthar County, where the institution is situated, are targeted first during the evacuation process. The family members of the students are also instructed to take out their relatives from the institution or face severe consequences.

Three nuns have committed suicide due to the ongoing demolition at Larung Gar so far. On July 20, a nun named Rinzin Dolma who resided in the institution hanged herself as she could not bear witness to the destruction of her academy.

Following her death, two more nuns took their lives owing to the destruction - Sengma from Dowa village in Dzamthang County and Tsering Dolma from Mewa Township in Marthang County, both in Sichuan province.
