DHARAMSHALA, June18: His Holiness the Dalai Lama told the graduating Class of 2017 of University of California San Diego (UCSD) that world peace must be achieved through inner peace and not through weapons.

Addressing an audience of 25,000 including around 6,000 graduating students at the university’s RIMAC Field, the Dalai Lama said, “You have the opportunity and also the responsibility to create a better world, peaceful and a happier world. In order to do that, we must first have inner peace. World peace must be achieved through inner peace and not through weapon.”

Attending as the keynote speaker at the commencement, the Dalai Lama while congratulating the graduating students advised them to use the knowledge gained from years of studies to make it a ‘source of peace’.

“It is not guaranteed that education alone can bring inner peace. So, it is essential to combine warm-heartedness and the brilliant brain to be happier and peaceful individual,” the Nobel Peace Laureate said while highlighting that happy family, happy society, is very much dependent on inner peace.

His Holiness said told the graduates that the new life they are about to enter won’t be easy. Offering advise on how to face the challenges, he spoke on the importance of ‘determination’, ‘willpower’ and optimism’. “For that also warm-heartedness is needed to built self confidence. If you have too much self-centered attitude, there will be more fear, hesitant and distrust. Warm-heartedness is the key factor for development of determination, willpower and optimism,” he said while sharing from his own experience about how these things helped him through his ‘difficult life’.

Before the commencement, His Holiness the Dalai Lama was honored with the UC San Diego Medal, the school’s highest honor, by Chancellor Pradeep Khosla becoming the 12th recipient of the honor.

“His wisdom inspires us to be better, and better caretakers of the world and better caretakers of each other,” Khosla said. “This is a noble message, and one that is needed now more than ever. As we wrestle with instability in our world, his message transcends borders and languages.”

The commencement day also saw few Chinese students walking out of the ceremony as sign of protest.
