DHARAMSHALA, December 6 - The Tibetan leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama who is currently in the Indian capital for winter sojourn has expressed his sadness over the passing away of his "dear friend" Nelson Mandela on Thursday.

“In his death the world has lost a great leader, whose steadfast and unflinching determination played a key role in securing peace and reconciliation during South Africa’s transition from apartheid rule. Under his leadership South Africa was transformed through peaceful means, in the spirit of reconciliation,” the Tibetan leader wrote.

His Holiness said that he will personally miss the South African leader, who he had hoped to meet again and for whom he had great admiration and respect.

“He was a man of courage, principle and unquestionable integrity, a great human being, someone of whom we can truly say, “He lived a meaningful life.” I pray for him and offer my heartfelt condolences to you, the members of your family and the entire people of South Africa.”

Though Nelson Mandela is physically no more, his spirit will go on, wrote the Tibetan leader who was denied visa to travel to South Africa in 2009. The South African government admitted its decision was taken to avoid undermining relations with China, which reacts angrily to any country hosting the Dalai Lama.

"The best tribute we can pay to him is to do whatever we can to contribute to honoring the oneness of humanity and working for peace and reconciliation as he did."
