DHARAMSHALA, June 8: His Holiness the Dalai Lama today told teachers and heads of various Tibetans schools from all over India and Nepal that they should adopt a compassionate approach to mould children’s future.

“While teaching, a teacher should have compassionate approach towards students and should take initiatives to mould his life. Teaching should not merely for the students to just pass. You should not be a like a tape recorder without feelings,” His Holiness the Dalai Lama told around 140 teachers on the topic of ‘Ways to Propagate Ethics Without Touching Religion’. The Tibetan leader was speaking during a special audience with teachers at his residence today.

The Octogenarian leader said that a kinder teacher has more impact on a student as he or she automatically develops a sense of respect towards the teacher and subsequently the lessons taught get imprinted much finer. Whereas, teaching without care and concern leaves no impact a student’s life, said His Holiness.

His Holiness said that negligence towards modern education and sticking to old customs were mistakes of the past rectified after coming in to exile. “We have improved. However, we must not just be satisfied with the existing system since improvement has no end. Hence we must not be content and put more efforts to improve further. It is our collective responsibility,” the exiled Tibetan leader said.

The Tibetan leader has always maintained that the modern education only focuses on material goals with little scope for inner values.

The Nobel Peace Laureate said that the main objective behind including Buddha’s teachings into academic subject without touching any religious aspect is to reach a wider audience and coverage.

“India’s population is over a Billion comprising of other major religions. So if we associate the subject with Buddhism, other religion followers won’t accept. Therefore it must be not to linked to a particular religion and simply be taught as part of the curriculum,” the Dalai Lama said.

The President of Central Tibetan Administration, Lobsang Sangay, vowed that Tibetan schools would be the first and the best to introduce moral ethics in curriculum.
