DHARAMSHALA, Oct. 2: The exile Tibetan government known officially as the Central Tibetan Administration on the 149th birth anniversary of the global non-violence icon Mahatma Gandhi, observed the ‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan’ (Clean India project) on Tuesday to express gratitude to the Indian government and its people through the cleanliness drive.

CTA’s staffers and local Tibetans initiated a mass cleanliness drive in and around McLeod Ganj and Gangkyi area. The event was flagged off by Kalon Choekyong Wangchuk, Department of Health, CTA at Mcleod Ganj Square. Honourable Municipal Commissioner Sandeep Kadam as well as executive members of the Indo-Tibet Friendship Association also attended the event.

CTA President Dr. Lobsang Sangay said that the gratitude Tibetan government in exile and people feel towards India isn’t merely hollow words but reciprocation of their gratitude through actions. The head of the Tibetan polity also urged all the Tibetans in exile to participate in the cleanliness drive.

Gandhi Jayanti is celebrated on the birthday of the Ahimsa icon Mahatma Gandhi who is considered the ‘father of the nation’ in India. His revolutionary non-violent movement and leadership against British rule inspired generations for peace including civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King and Tibetan leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama.
