DHARAMSHALA, Oct. 3: In a development that experts say will give China a considerable upper hand in the geopolitical standing at the cagey India-China (occupied Tibet) border near Arunachal Pradesh, China has officially opened an expressway from the Tibetan city of Lhasa to Nyingchi near the Tibetan side of the border.

The expressway measuring 409 kilometers is officially open for business, China’s state-run media Xinhua reported. The expressway cost $5.8 billion to build and is said to cut the travel time between Lhasa and Nyingchi from eight to five hours, with a speed limit of 80 km per hour.

Experts say that the current infrastructure will give the Chinese military advantage in transporting equipment and troop to the border with India at Arunachal Pradesh in northeastern India, which has seen skirmishes between the two sides frequently.

The new road will also be instrumental in assisting development and accessibility on the other side of the border, experts say. Xinhua has reported that the expressway will boost tourism in regions connecting the two cities of Lhasa and Nyinchi.

In August, China and India ended a military standoff and withdrew troops in Doklam region in Bhutan near Indian border that lasted for months. India confronted the Chinese military when the latter was constructing a strategic metaled road in the disputed Doklam plateau. The completion of the Chinese military project would give them tactical upper hand in what the experts call the “chicken’s neck” region near Siliguri in the event of disharmony with India.
